Il Colonnino restaurant, located in the heart of Pisa, near Teatro Verdi and the main streets of the historic center, offers a warm and rustic atmosphere in a location that, with its walls and stone vaults, recalls am old-time tavern.

The strictly family management gives a hospitable and cosy atmosphere.

You can have dinner by candlelight appreciating one of the many selected labels or valuable bottles from our wine list.

In the hall there is also a perfectly intact sculpture of the 1400, called “Il Colonnino”, from which the name of the place originates.


We have always served the typical dishes of Tuscan and Pisan tradition, by choosing carefully every ingredient and putting all our passion in what we do.

The traditional dishes are presented and served with simplicity, allowing the customer to focus on the aromas and flavors; for the revisited recipes and dishes we let ourselves be guided by a vein of creativity also in the presentation.

Among our traditional dishes, we reserve a special reference to the exclusive Tagliata di Chianina and the iconic Peposo of “Mucco Pisano”, much appreciated by all our local and foreign customers.

The history of this dish is linked to the construction of the Cathedral of Florence and dates back to 1400. In Greve and Impruneta, two small towns that now belong to the metropolitan city of Florence, there were brick factories, our classic jars for the oil. The workers worked from morning to night at the kilns, so they began throwing in a jar, at dawn, some pieces of meat, kept on the oven’s mouth to avoid carbonizing them.

The most used meat was the poor beef cuts like the muscle and the leg, which became very tasty and soft thanks to this slow cooking. Then you added a lot of pepper, several cloves of garlic and red wine, and everything was accompanied by lots of bread. And here comes the Peposo, a simple but delicious dish, made by us with selected veal meat, bred in our Tuscan pastures.

Choosing the right matching for each course will be very simple and suggestive also thanks to the possibility to view the labels directly from the winery on sight or asking for a suggestion to the host Stefano.

The true tradition of this restaurant would want the host to suggest the glass of wine suitable for each course, which for flavors and intensity require different types of tannins, alcoholic degrees and more or less intense fragrances.

A pleasant meal can never be finished without having appreciated a soft and round distillate or a earthy and fragrant Rhum.

The local pasta dishes were rich and tasty and the tiramisu ice cream was so creamy! Portion sizes were sensible too. Strongly recommend, rare to find such a gem in a touristy town.
